Slow Down to Speed Up: Simple Habits to Balance Your Life

One trend I’ve loved watching grow over recent years is the increasing realisation that doing everything until you physically drop - is no longer the goal. Instead, creating balance between work / life / focus / fun / dedication / rest is where we're aiming!

This message of slowing down is helping to spread the importance of taking care of yourself as well as maintaining those goals and ambitions.

For many though, the thought of stepping back and hitting pause can still feel pretty uncomfortable and counterintuitive when you’re focused on making progress towards your dreams.

But the truth is, intentional rest not only makes you physically and mentally healthier - it improves your productivity and ability to work at your best level.

Taking this approach increases cognitive clarity, reduces overwhelm and fatigue, and ultimately leads to faster, more meaningful and sustainable progress.

Why Slowing Down Matters

Slowing down doesn’t mean giving up or being "lazy", it’s about creating a pause in your day or week to allow yourself to step away and nurture your own needs.

Slowing down is about aligning with what truly matters so that you can focus on the things that need your attention and letting go of habits and behaviours that just clutter your head and steal your time and energy.

When you don’t take care of yourself, it doesn’t take long for issues like fatigue, stress or burnout to creep up on you. These can not only impact your confidence and self-belief, but your ability to think clearly and to make good decisions.

When you’re not working at 100mph - you give yourself space to not only look at the short term pressures and commitments, but to reflect on your work and progress often, allowing you to focus on the best path forward for long-term, sustainable growth.

Think about a time you had to make a decision when you were stressed / exhausted / burnt out. Looking back, would you have made different decisions or approached things differently? Did you react the way you wanted to react during that time?

When you work at a slower pace, giving time to reflect and review progress, you will be able to think with more clarity, and navigate challenges that come up with confidence.

How to Embrace Gentle Growth

The key to gentle growth is to create and maintain flow so that you are continually moving forward - at your own pace! It's not about standing still - it's taking intentional action alongside taking care of yourself and living life along the way.

1. Set Realistic Goals

The key with this approach is to understand that you are absolutely working towards those big dreams. You are working towards changing your life and business. Being realistic refers to your day to day, week to week schedule.

Being realistic is not lowering the bar or your expectations!

Set monthly, weekly goals that are realistic in terms of the physical time you have to spend on this project, and the time, energy and hidden steps that all play a part in working towards goals.

2. Reflect & Review

Frequently checking in with your progress - for example, end of the day / weekly reviews and monthly in-depth reflections, will keep you clear on where you are, what's been finished / in progress / needs doing / needs adapting.

Spending time doing this will save you a tonne of time in the long run as you're able to pivot and make changes along the way rather than wasting weeks working on something that ends up becoming redundant.

And while you're there - celebrate your progress. Find those small wins and celebrate how far you have come. This is a great motivation and confidence booster.

3. Prioritise Your Well-Being

Rest: Build rest into your daily schedule. Log it in as you plan for the week, just as you do with your meetings. These may be a collection of short breaks throughout the day, earlier finishing / later starting. however you prefer to work, this is as essential as that very-important-call you have booked in..!

Daily Routines: This can be as informal as you prefer. But creating a routine each morning can help to set yourself up for the day. If time is short - don't worry - it could be as simple as enjoying a cuppa before the kids / partner gets up and journaling for a few minutes.

Make Time For Joy: This is more than those breaks we spoke about. This is planning in time each day / week to do something that fills your cup.

Say "No" More: Boundaries are key but often difficult to implement - especially if you're in the business of helping others. But saying no to extra work, or things / people that drain your energy will help you protect your time and prevent unnecessary extra pressure.

Your Roadmap to Balance and Growth

Sustainable success isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about knowing when to push and when to ease up. By slowing down, you create space for growth that’s intentional, balanced, and aligned with what truly matters to you.

There may be times where you need to spend more time working, followed by other periods that require less of you. Keep a balanced outlook during those busier times, and make the most out of the slower seasons -without rushing to fill it with more...

Find a way of working that allows flexibility, encourages focus along with resting. This blog talks about the benefits of working flexibility, and how it can support your energy while also increasing your productivity in the longer-term. It's a helpful read, and something I encourage others to look into.

Final Thoughts:

Slowing down isn’t losing momentum, it’s a way of building something longer lasting, that doesn't feel as stressful or chaotic, and that you can enjoy along the way.

Take a deep breath, and remind yourself: Balance leads to growth that you can truly sustain, and while it may feel alien to begin with, this slower pace doesn’t hold you back, it actually sets you free to create more balance while knowing you are moving forward.

What are your thoughts on Slowing Down?

Do you feel comfortable with easing back when you're working towards something?

What's stopping you from making these changes?

This can be a great journaling exercise:

  • Tap into those thoughts, and ask yourself why it feels uncomfortable.
  • Listen to the answer and ask yourself "but why" once more. If you feel you've uncovered the true reason here, explore what this means and how you can reframe those thoughts and beliefs.
  • If you're still surface scratching - keep using the "why" technique to help you understand where the resistance is coming from.

Don't forget to share your reflections below :)
